How Much Does a Charging Station Cost? Why Is There No Fixed Price?
The cost of an EV charging station investment varies widely with the type of device and the site, so quoting a single list price would be misleading. There is a considerable difference between an AC home-type unit and a high-power DC fast charging station. Below we explain the factors that determine the cost.
Factors That Determine the Cost
- AC or DC: AC units are markedly more economical; DC fast chargers require a higher investment because of their power electronics.
- Power (kW): The hardware cost of a 22 kW AC unit differs from that of a 180–360 kW DC unit.
- Grid connection: High-power DC may require a transformer or grid upgrade; this is an item that is often overlooked but large.
- Number of units and sockets: Single socket or multiple sockets; how many stations will be installed.
- Installation and infrastructure: Excavation, cabling, mounting and site preparation.
- CSMS software: Software (charging station management system) for management, payment, roaming and reporting to EPDK, Turkey's Energy Market Regulatory Authority (usually a subscription).
Software Cost: The Subscription Model
Besides the hardware, operating the station requires CSMS software. It is usually offered as a monthly subscription or on a usage-share model and covers remote monitoring, tariffs, payment, revenue settlement and regulatory updates.
Return on Investment
Payback depends on the location's traffic, the tariff, the utilisation rate and the cost of electricity. A heavily used DC station in the right location can pay for itself faster than an AC one. Roaming shortens the payback period by increasing utilisation.
