What Is an EV Charging Station?

An EV charging station is the combination of the device that safely charges the battery of electric vehicles (EVs) from the power grid and the software that manages it. The hardware charges the vehicle; the software in the background (CSMS) monitors the station remotely, sets prices, takes payment and produces reports.

Difference Between AC and DC Charging Stations

Charging stations basically fall into two types:

  • AC (alternating current) charging: The conversion takes place in the vehicle's on-board charging unit, so power is limited (usually 3.7–22 kW). It is economical for homes, workplaces and long-stay parking areas.
  • DC (direct current) fast charging: The conversion is done in the device and high power is delivered directly to the battery (50–360 kW). It charges the vehicle within minutes and suits motorways, public stations and fleets.

Connector Types

Common connectors in Turkey and Europe: Type 2 on the AC side, CCS2 (Combined Charging System) for DC fast charging and, on some vehicles, CHAdeMO. Modern stations usually offer Type 2 + CCS2 together.

What Is OCPP and Why Does It Matter?

OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) is the open communication standard between chargers and the management software (CSMS). An OCPP-compliant device can work with management software from different brands, which frees the operator from dependence on a single manufacturer. SmartŞarj is compatible with OCPP 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0.

How Is a Charging Network Managed? (CSMS)

An operator running more than one charging station uses a CSMS (Charging Station Management System) to manage them all from a single panel: remote monitoring, tariffs, payment, roaming and reporting to EPDK (Turkey's Energy Market Regulatory Authority). Drivers find a station in the mobile app, start charging with a QR code and pay.

Who Installs EV Charging Stations?

Shopping malls, car parks, hotels, residential complexes, workplaces, fuel stations and charging network operators. In Turkey, providing a public charging service is subject to an EPDK licence.
